Interaction Techniques and Technologies in Human-Computer Interaction

Abstract

Animation has appeared in many contexts with various functions and roles, from bouncing icons, progress bars, and smooth transitions to fancy animated jingles and tutorials. The first part of this section concerns the three basic affordances of animation from human perceptual, cognitive, and affective points of view, on the basis of which various functions can be designed. The second part of the section reviews the functions animations and motion can serve in human–computer interaction (HCI), organized into five overarching categories.
