« Perception of music and speech: Evidence from behavioral and ERP studies »
What factors can affect our perception of music and speech? I present a selection of papers that have demonstrated differences in auditory perception based on native language, musical experience, and the presence or absence of a developmental disorder. I will begin with an overview of studies examining low-level auditory perception and perception of emotion in music by musicians, non-musicians, and children with autism. I will then discuss potential crossovers between music and language; first, I will present data on how native language affects general auditory perception, and second, I will present proposals for future research projects further examining interactions between these two domains.
